Cross-language merged speech units and their descriptive phonetic correlates
نویسندگان
چکیده
The focus of this paper is to formulate an approach to merging phonemes across languages and to evaluate the resulting crosslanguage merged speech units on the basis of the traditional acousticphonetic descriptions of the phonemes. The methodology is based on the belief that some phonemes across a set of languages may be similar enough to be equated, contrasting traditional phonology which treats phonemes from one language independent from phonemes from another language. The identification of cross-language speech units is performed by an iterative data-driven procedure, which merges acoustically similar phonemes from within one language as well as across languages. The paper interprets a number of merged speech units on the basis of articulatory descriptions.

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملHungarian Vowel Harmony
A system of phonological rules and representations has at least two aims: one is to describe the way in which words (and larger stretches of utterances) are realized in speech, and to state which logically possible streams of speech sounds are legitimate in the language under description – this is part of observational adequacy. The other aim is to capture the pattern of sounds characteristic o...

This instrumental study of the phonetic contrast between English /ptk/ and /bdg/ produced by Saudi Arabians reveals that native-language phonetic nonTis may carryover to production of target-language sounds. Despite the existence of phonetic interference, however, the present cross-sectional study suggests that Saudi learners gradually approximate the phonetic norms of English, at least insofar...

متن کاملSyllable structure based phonetic units for context-dependent continuous Thai speech recognition
Choice of the phonetic units speech recognizer is a factor greatly affecting the system performance. Phonetic units are normally defined according to the acoustic properties of a speech. Nevertheless, with the limit of training data, too delicate acoustic properties are ignored. Syllable structure is one of the properties usually ignored in English phonetic units due to a lot of possible onsets...
